Dr. Meanie is In the HOUSE

The first grumpy guy that made an impression on me was this local DJ, Patrick Teoh. He had a show on Radio Four in the early 90s and was famous for being rude and brash on national radio. He's the kind of guy you either love or hate.

Back in those days they don't prerecord phone calls and edit them nicely before putting them on air. All calls went in live. You'd get callers in raw, and sometimes with their radios still on and they'd get confused because of the 5 second delay in transmission. This was source of frustration for Patrick, and once in awhile, he fights back:

Patrick Teoh: Hello good morning! This is Radio Four...
Caller: Is this Radio Four?
Patrick Teoh: Yes. Ma'am...
Caller: Hello... Is this Radio Four?
Patrick Teoh: Yes this is Radio Four. Go ahead ma'am.
Caller: Is this Radio Four?
Patrick Teoh: Not any more... (hangs up the phone and chuckles

I remember laughing outloud when a caller asked if he has reached Radio Four and Patrick informed the caller that he has in fact dialled the wrong number and this was a bakery instead. The caller apologised and hung up the phone. You could here Patrick smirking.

It was great radio.

Grumpy men. We all love them. I think it's because they are so vocal with their opinions they don't care who they hurt.

It is this quality, I think that makes you love people like Patrick, Simon Cowell, Jack Nicholson and of course Dr. Gregory House.
